- by Dennis Passovoy - A number of years ago, I worked for a Fortune 50 company - the first and only one in my 30-some year career. It was a totally different experience for me, since I had been used to companies no larger than about $100M in annual sales up to that point. I won't bore you with the details, but suffice to say, I left the company after less than 2 1/2 years. This was the shortest I had worked anywhere in my professional career. Frankly, I was embarrased to tell people how long I had been there until someone told me that the average tenure for someone in my position (I was a vice president) was 6 months! If you’re a Baby Boomer, or even a Gen X'er, you remember the IBM culture that hit its peak in the 80’s. Baby Boomers accepted these structures as the way it is--you have to start in the mail room and work your way up. Gen X had this mentality drilled into their heads from their parents, and started out this way, but realized that this culture was breaking down in the 90s, especially with the emergence of the tech sector and dot coms who couldn’t recruit enough people. The show “the Office” on NBC pokes fun at the corporate world; and as an HR executive, I sometimes cringe at some of the antics that Michael Scott (the office manger) seems to get away with. Some of this is due to the fact that Michael Scott’s branch of Dunder Mifflin is the most successful branch in the company (which I’m sure is a result of the writers’ irony, that this bumbling idiot has the most successful branch). Some of you may recognize the title of this blog as coming from the late, great Yogi Berra. At the time, he was giving directions to another famous baseball player, Joe Garagiola, on how to get to his New Jersey home, which is accessible by two different routes.

Well, beside this quote being so typical of Yogi Berra (i.e., obvious, non-sensical, ...), it also represents something I truly believe in. Many people today are so worried about making the wrong decision that they frequently make no decision at all. What if I take the wrong job? Or, marry the wrong person? Or, go to the wrong place for a vacation? Or, order the wrong meal for dinner? I met last week with a client of mine who operates a chain of casual-dining restaurants. He's got just over 500 employees working at 7 restaurants. He currently supplies health insurance only to the managers and full-time corporate staff (about 50 employees).

His dilema involves whether to cover the remaining eligible employees when the new Health Care Reform provisions kick in or just pay the penalty associated with not providing health care to these workers. The difference is huge. As my son was growing up, he came to label my wife and I according to the life-lessons we generously bestowed on him. For my wife's part, she became known by him as the person who had a seemingly unlimited store of numbered lectures. It got to the point where he only needed to be reminded of the number (e.g., "lecture #31") and his behavior was immediately modified.

I, on the other hand, became known for a single piece of advice I repeatedly gave him - "Everywhere you go, there you are." How do we get our kids to always do the right thing? Or, get our employees to be healthier - i.e., lose weight, exercise, stop smoking, etc.? Or, instill in people an internal locus of control - i.e., they (mostly) are the master of their own destiny? As employers, we want - no, we need - our employees to take responsibility for their actions. In their Global Workforce Study for 2007-2008, Towers Perrin tells us "that only one out of every five workers today is giving full discretionary effort on the job — going well above and beyond what’s required because they’re caught up in the passion and purpose of creating a better product, service or customer experience".

So, what does this mean? Should we spend all of our time as leaders trying to engage the almost 80% of our workforce that is not engaged at work so they become more productive? I think the answer is a resounding NO. [...]
